The area around Santa Pola/GranAlacant is, in my opinion, an area much under-watched. In the short time I was there I compiled a list of 35 species, such as, Osprey, Marsh Harrier, Great grey shrike, Black winged stilt and Pink flamingo. Add to that a few more that, for various reasons, I could not identify. For me it was a combination of seeing different birds and some I know but, in winter plumage. The area offers diverse habitat, arid and rocky scrub, cliffs, sea shore, muddy shallows and salt pans. If there are any birders out there, enjoy.

Keith,
You’ll have to get yourself a camera that will take picture of these exotic species. I don’t know about you, but I could not for the life of me find a book on Birds of Spain. Let me know if you have more success than me.

You have a copy of the field guide to birds of Britain and Europe, that should suffice. Three good sites to look at for more information are http://www.surfbirds.com http://www.fatbirder.com http://www.nhbs.co.uk. If you use google and enter the name of a particular bird it will come up with the information. Thank you for your comments and sorry that I have not posted them sooner. Keith
