You will have to see the pictures to appreciate this. While we were at Dingwall we fed the birds with seeds and sultanas. One blackbird became very brave, to the extent that he would stand in the doorway if there was no food out. We left the jar containing  the sultanas outside, so what did he do, help himself?  When he could no longer reach them, he tipped the jar over.

look forward to seeing the photos!!!

  2. Cool that bird is really clever but he’s a bit greedy

  3. On the face of it he did seem greedy. Judging by his condition I suspect he was feeding young and took the food to feed the chicks. Blackbirds have a reputation for being good parents. What I found interesting was the way he dealt with the food to get the maximum amount in his beak. He also benefited from not being aggressive, whilst the others were being competitive he moved in and maximised his returns. Clever bird.

  4. Uncle Keith,
Can you share your knowledge with me, we have 4 or 5 small birds in the garden. Looking at our books they look very much like juvenille Pallas warblers as they hover like a humming bird and can fly straight through 1 inch wire netting into the fruit cage. Failing that we wonder if they could be Greenish Warblers but not sure if these hover, do you know?
    Love Sandra.

  5. Sandra, off the top of my head I do not know the answer, I will do some research. I Have a very good programme on my computer. Failing that we will be hitting France in about a month and hope to pay you a visit, we could have a look then.

  6. Have done some research the source mentions the hovering flight, a Pallas warbler. Well done.
