Yesterday, Thursday, the ten of us on site went to a local restaurant for lunch.
Main course, sweet, coffee and wine. €8-50 each. Good value or what?
Jan and Keith would like to wish all our readers a happy Christmas and a good new year.
The location of the site is at a village named Lagoao, near Moncarapacho, Algarve, Portugal.
Today we walked across country to Moncarapacho, about twenty minutes.
Sat outside a bar, Jan had a brandy, Keith a beer, the cost? €2-50
We walked back along the road to the site.
Very pleasant in the afternoon sunshine.
Tomorrow! shopping at Iceland, Albuferia. Christmas food.
We have stayed on site today, a few chores, but, mostly sat in the sun reading. ( Oh, and drunk some wine) We had to go inside at lunchtime because it was too hot, the high thirties. We came out again when it dropped down to the twenties.
How about you?
You wanted pictures of the sunshine, well here we go. The temperature is bottom right of the time.
We were sat outside reading until four, had to go inside when the temperature dropped to 16.
Hope you feel sorry for us!
Just to cheer you up, cloudy and showers. 23 degrees in the van.
Do not ever complain about post office queues in the UK, compared to Portugal it is nothing.
Because of an automatic toll system on the motorways we needed a transponder in the vehicles, go to the post office, you can get one there. Tuesday afternoon, queue for an hour, come back tomorrow I will deal it with then said the man. Back we go on Wednesday queue for another hour, got one for the car, told that we do not need one for the motor home?
That’s the abridged version.
We had a lady bird on for the first two days. Got fed up with it when it kept asking us to play the beatles.
We have read about the behaviour which is the subject of this blog. We have witnessed it in the UK and on the continent, mainly in motorway and major road service areas. The species involved are generally pied wagtails or house sparrows.
They have learnt that insects are killed and get stuck to moving vehicles. They operate from a point that provide cover close to vehicle parking areas . Some are so good at this that they approach a vehicle as soon as it stops but, do not actually get on board until the engine is switched off. Each bird appears to have its favourite place on a vehicle, the front, under the wheel arches, etc. Some even get inside of the radiator and air intake grills on larger vehicles.
If, as many of you do, feed birds, there is one who takes the risk and approaches the food source before others who follow when they feel safe. These are the birds who have pioneered this behaviour and others have learnt from them. The question is who gets the best feeding spots and how? Have some birds been killed by approaching to early?
Look and learn.
